Dear Mr. Borden,
Thank you for sending me the Symphony volume. As a means of
demonstrating my printing system I have set up the first movement of
the d'Ordonez Symphony in B-flat (page 211 of volume B IV.) I have
enclosed several proof sheets showing different layouts for this
work. Sheets #3-7 show the movement occupying 5 pages, 2 systems per
page. Sheets #8-16 show the movement on 9 pages, 1 system per page.
Sheet #1 is a 50% reduction of sheet #2. The reduction was done by
the inexpensive direct reduction method which requires no
intermediate negative. For your publications I would recommend at
least a 30% reduction to approach engraving quality. This might
require a photo negative. (See sheet #19.) Sheets #17 and 18 are
performance parts created from the score's data.
Since I have not done projects as large as yours with my
system it is not possible to be sure about a realistic price
schedule. My method of calculating the costs is based on the number
of separate items that the computer must consider for each page. An
"item" is a note, a rest, a clef, etc. At a price of 3.5 cents per
item, with a minimum of $8 per page, the various sheets enclosed
would cost as follows.
#3 - 412 Items -- $14.42 #8 - 185 Items -- $8.00
4 - 400 Items -- 14.00 9 - 268 Items -- 9.38
5 - 396 Items -- 13.86 10 - 256 Items -- 8.96
6 - 447 Items -- 15.64 11 - 190 Items -- 8.00
7 - 414 Items -- 14.49 12 - 278 Items -- 9.73
Average=$14.48/page 13 - 186 Items -- 8.00
14 - 270 Items -- 9.45
15 - 286 Items -- 10.01
16 - 163 Items -- 8.00
Average=$8.84/page
When accompanying a full score, the parts are priced at 2.5
cents per item, with a minimum of $6.50 per page.
#17 - 299 Items -- $7.47 #18 - 331 Items -- $8.27
Additionally I would expect you to cover all postage costs.
For these prices I can provide master sheets for 50%
reduction. (I will be able to make master sheets for reduction to 30%
for 50 cents more per page.) On this basis I could prepare at least
one volume of your series. After that I could most likely set rates
that would hold for at least one year. I would also request that
some small notice about the printing process be included in each
volume.
I would expect you to send me at least two copies of all your
original material. Then I would provide you with proof sheets of the
score which would contain all the material which appeared on the
original parts. These could be returned to me with all the editorial
additions that would appear on the final master sheets.
If you are able to make a trip to California I would be happy
to give you a demonstration of my system. Until the middle of March
my only busy days are Mondays and Thursdays. I will be in Los
Angeles on February 22 and I may have to return there for a couple of
days later on, but otherwise you could come at most any time, just so
long as I can know about a week in advance.
Very sincerely,
Leland Smith
